Computer won't recognize iPod?

First, make sure you have installed the correct version of ITunes. If you have a
64-bit edition of Windows Vista or Windows 7, you need  the iTunes 64-bit installer.  This is a different version than the default download link that appears on iTunes.com.

If you installed the 32-bit edition, uninstall it, reboot your computer.  Install the 64-bit version.

Next, it is possible that an incorrect driver was installed. Plug in your iPod, go to Control Panel > Device Manager and delete the iPod driver listed under USB devices. Unplug your iPod. Restart your computer. Launch iTunes. Plug in you iPod. The correct driver should automatically get installed.
